“Why were you searching for me? he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”

As I read through Luke Chapter 2 this morning, wondering again at the coming of Jesus and then His presentation at the temple, I finally came to these first words of Jesus. Because they are the first words of Jesus I think Luke is trying to tell us something important here. I think Jesus asks me the same question. I think Jesus asks the same question to His people. The saying is on Sunday that we “are to go to church” or go to “God’s house” and what we generally mean is going to a building and sitting and listening to someone for an hour or longer. Having been in the Army for 20 years and now teaching middle school students has helped me realize that soldeirs and students don’t learn by just listening, but mainly by doing, I have become more of a facilitator, in fact maybe being a leader and/or teacher is just that, a facilitator and nothing more. I believe we all truly are searching for Jesus, to experience His life, but Jesus gives us a clue…Jesus is in “God’s house.” Where is God’s house today? Is it a building made of brick and wood? The Bible says that the followers of Jesus ARE the temple of God, ARE the building of God, ARE the body of Christ, ARE God’s house, because Jesus is God and now indwells every follower of Him through His Spirit. Jesus said that where two or three are gathered together in His name there He is in our midst. Is it possible that the church focuses too much on the giftednes of only a few instead of the many? Is it possible that every follower of Jesus can do ministry – can serve, can experience Jesus? Is it possible that when His people gather together and have the opportunity to share with each other in love, living life together in the normal places of life, using the gifts He has given us, we can find the presence of Jesus? Is it possible that the church’s leaders, in humility, could come off the platform and faclitate, help equip God’s people, to actually DO the ministry and experience Jesus instead of doing it themselves? Is it possible that the followers of Jesus would be willing to allow it’s leaders to just facilitate and equip instead of being lazy and letting them have Jesus all to themselves? Jesus wants us to find Him – He is found when His people come together in life and share His life together! Open my heart Lord to let others share Jesus with me and I with them.
